I'm open to all kinds of artistic interpretation--it's what keeps the creative world spinning. But some movies, songs, books, etc. should be left alone, and the recent remake of "We are the World" provies it.
Bottom line--the remake doesn't cut it. Subpar talent for the most part (Miley Cyrus? Just Beiber?). And dear lawd....can you tell me who was torturing Wyclef Jean when he "sang" his part?
I know--nice idea to help Haiti. But write a new song. If you watch the 2 videos side-by-side, the flaws of the new version are obvious. Just take a look at the fIrst we are the world:
* Lionel Ritchie starts and harmonizes with Stevie Wonder
* Then Stevie Wonder sings a line or two, followd by Paul Simon and Kenny Rogers
* Cue Jeffrey Osbourne, Tina Turner and Billy Joel
* Here come Michael and his glove
* Diana Ross
* Dionne Warwick & Willie Nelson
* Al Jaureau and some dude name Springsteen trade lines for awhile
You get the idea. THAT is star power. And none of them oversing--they give the song just what it needs, when it needs it. Very well done. Here's the original version. Just sit back and enjoy.
And here is the new version:
